Two days ago, we challenged you to guess the #innovation behind these emojis: 💧✨🔬🤖💡 – here's the answer: Our laser-based 2D fluorescence immersion probe! Developed at the Fraunhofer ILT, this smart probe monitors water treatment processes in real time directly inside #wastewater treatment plants. How does it work? Certain substances in wastewater, such as amino acids and humic acids, emit light (#fluoresce) when exposed to certain laser wavelengths. The probe shines light on the water, detects the fluorescence signals and produces 2D 'maps' (excitation-emission matrices) that provide detailed information about the organic contaminants in the water. Why is this innovative? 🧪 It allows real-time monitoring, enabling plant operators to adjust processes more efficiently.  🧪 It reduces energy use and the need for expensive or harmful chemicals. 🧪 The data can be used to create smarter systems by combining it with #AI. European collaboration for testing success 🤝 Razorcat Development GmbH and Embedded Ocean (https://xentara.io/) are consortium members of the ITEA project GenerIoT (https://lnkd.in/ejWB7uBn). The project is developing new methods and technologies to simplify the handling of IoT software across the entire development and product life cycle. The current state of the art in IoT system testing is dominated by much manual work when integrating the machine with the controller software. Systematic testing for product qualification or during development is not widely applied, so that an automated testing approach would greatly enhance the IoT development. One of the use cases emerging within the project shall show the advantages of the flexible and open Xentara IoT platform being used for system testing in development, qualification, production and maintenance in conjunction with the high-level test specification language CCDL. 💡The combination of systematic testing based on a generic IoT platform provides mutual benefits for both developers and testers of IoT systems: Testing can already be applied on the application model before any hardware is available, and the same test procedures can be run during development and qualification as well as in the production phase. In addition to that, standardized simulation models (Functional Mockup Units FMU) can be assigned too. Don't we all want a peek into the future sometimes? For developers and researchers working on electronic systems, we at Fraunhofer ENAS can turn this wish into reality.   We conduct 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀 that simulate 10 years of wear and tear on electronic components within just a few months.   This enables for example developers to adjust components before serial production, to identify the risk of early failures during development and to eliminate their cause. For this purpose, they are confronted with extreme temperatures or humidity – from the freezing cold of Alaska’s winter to the scorching heat of the Sahara – in order to accelerate the typical aging and damage processes that inevitably occur during operation and normal use. This ensures that only products with optimized properties and service lives are brought onto the market, that they function perfectly under real operating conditions throughout their service life and that they only fail after this period of use due to wear or material fatigue.   Do you want to know more about why and how we predict the future of electronic components at our institute? At Fraunhofer ENAS we understand the transformative potential of microelectronics in shaping our future and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible across numerous fields. One sector where electronic systems can have a meaningful impact is healthcare, as they not only offer new options for health monitoring but also innovate medical care solutions.   This innovation potential was the topic of this week’s 𝗦𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗖𝗢 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 (Secure Medical Electronics and Communications) in Dresden, Germany. It was directly followed by the “𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲” 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, where from the 12th – 13th, healthcare professionals, industry experts and research specialists explored the future of medicine that integrates AI and electronics. Our colleagues, Dr. Mario Baum and Florian Glauche, were also present to talk about a new approach to expanding the functions of cochlea implants and other future implants.   By integrating EEG signals as markers for attention, perception and speech comprehension, the goal is to make the implant more intelligent to enable the focused suppression of interfering noise. This way, the implant would be able to mimic the ability of normally functioning hearing abilities to “zoom in” on certain conservations, while subconsciously blocking other sounds, e. g., the ticking of a clock.   In collaboration with experts from Technische Universität Dresden, FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, MED-EL and our neighbor, EDC Electronic Design Chemnitz GmbH, Fraunhofer ENAS contributes to the venture by developing a highly miniaturized and biocompatible encapsulation method for medical implants and implantable components. Combining different layers in order to create an ultra-barrier, the envisioned layer system will not only protect the integrated sensors from bodily fluids but also act as an electromagnetic shield, ensuring optimal protection without having to rely on a traditional housing. With traditional housings being relatively space intensive, this solution allows for a higher degree of miniaturization of the implant and thus ensures greater patient comfort.   We are proud to be at the forefront of these revolutionary developments and look forward to the future advancements in medical technology.   Would you like to find out more about our system packaging solutions? 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆📈 The hybrid two-step process combines evaporated lead iodide with inkjet-printed organic precursors, achieving power conversion efficiencies (PCE) up to 18.2%. This method ensures exceptional reproducibility and scalability, crucial for large-scale production. 𝗘𝗰𝗼-𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝗗𝗠𝗦𝗢 𝗩𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 🌿 A significant innovation is the use of a dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) vapor treatment for lead iodide thin films. This increases film porosity, improving precursor absorption and resulting in more uniform material distribution. This eco-friendly approach avoids toxic solvents and enhances layer homogeneity. 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗸𝗷𝗲𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 🖨️ Precise control over printing parameters is critical for optimal film quality. Adjusting droplet deposition patterns mitigates issues like drying effects and inhomogeneities, producing smoother, defect-free perovskite films for high-efficiency solar cells. 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗰𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 This pioneering work was conducted by Raphael Pesch, Alexander Diercks, Julian Petry, Alexander Welle, Ronja Pappenberger, Fabian Schackmar, Helge Eggers, Johannes Sutter, Ulrich Lemmer, and Ulrich Wilhelm Paetzold. Their efforts highlight the potential of hybrid two-step processes in advancing perovskite solar cell technology toward commercial viability.
